Short Fiction Story

Look What You’ve Done

The sun was shining on his mother through the window in the kitchen as he walked into the room. He glanced to his left and saw all the medications keeping her pain at bay. The smoke from her cigarette began to form a cloud above her head as she coughed and gasped for air. He began to lecture her because he can not only see, but feel the damage being done to her body. The conversation quickly became an argument, “You’re just like your father…” Drake couldn’t hold back any longer and a fight broke out. The fight continued until he could no longer handle it and left. He was so frustrated and done with trying to help someone who just disregards everything he said. Not too long after, his cell phone started to ring. He looked down and it was her. “Hello?” “Hi, I’m sorry... I know I’m in the wrong, but this isn’t easy. I love you for everything you do for me, and I couldn’t do this without you. I’m just so tired and it’s like I can never just get a break from the pain,” she pleaded. “I know I’m sorry and I love you too.” “Will you please come home?” “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” he responded.
Cancer plagued her overworked and tired body, and the only way out was major surgery. The operation was so out of reach even with Drake’s acting career. He worked himself to the bone and it still wasn’t enough. He was at a loss of what to do for his dying mother, so J and Neeks sat him down to formulate a plan to save her life. Ideas were thrown around the room for hours on end. From a new job to selling drugs until they came up with the only viable solution; rob a bank.
Over the next 3 days, they thoroughly designed their plan for the unthinkable. The plan consisted of the 3 of them to wear all black attire, face masks to disguise themselves, a neighbor’s old station wagon as the getaway vehicle, and this was all to take place that Friday morning. All throughout the day Thursday, Drake’s mind was highly troubled from the verdict of the situation at hand. As he lay in bed that night, the phone rang. To his surprise, it was Lil’ Wayne on the other end of the phone. The conversation was no longer than 5 minutes, and he was already on the next flight to Houston.
For the next 2 weeks, they worked day and night on a mix tape of 17 songs. November 18th, 2009, Drake’s first mix tape was release and it spread like wildfire. Within the first week, over 20 million copies were downloaded. Drake soon returned home to celebrate his new found success. Due to his immediate popularity, Wayne didn’t hesitate to offer him a record deal. Drake was unsure of his final decision, so he consulted the one person he knew could help; his mother. “I think I’m done acting, I’m more in touch with the music,” he confessed. She said,” Either way you’ll be a star, you can go so far.” After talking it over, his mother threw him the keys to her Lexus to drive to L.A. to fulfill his wildest dreams.
October’s Own, Drake’s first major album, sold over 50 million copies worldwide in the first month. With his new found fortune, he managed to pay for his mother’s operation. The cancer was cleared from her body like God had performed a miracle. As she healed from surgery, Drake never left her side. Her body grew stronger with each coming day, and he wanted to give her a gift she truly deserved. July 22, 2010, the doctor declared Drake’s mother into remission, and they were on a plane to Rome that night.
